With the aim of empowering unemployed youth and women by equipping them with essential skills, Kouga Wind Farm has helped at least 40 people get their licences under its drivers licence programme.
Facilitated by One Way Driving School in Humansdorp, the intensive course is open to everyone in the communities around the wind farm. Sponsored at an average cost of R5,000 per person, the course covers everything from learners licence training to providing practical driving instruction ahead of the test.
“We are proud to say that some people pass on their first attempt, but we are equally proud of and encouraged by those who persevered to pass on their second or even third attempt,” says economic development manager Trevor Arosi.
“One of the most sought-after skills by employers in the region is the ability to operate a vehicle safely and legally. By equipping community members with the essential skills, backed up by a valid drivers licence, the wind farm is helping to improve their employability.”
